Women's Volleyball: Six And Oh-So-Good As Eagles Top Suffolk, 3-1
Nashua - Junior Chelsey Crawford (Westfield, Mass.) continued her torrid pace of late, knocking down a match-high 15 kills while senior Kate-Lynn Breault (Hudson, N.H.) followed with nine kills guiding the Daniel Webster women's volleyball team to its first 6-0 start in program history with a 3-1 victory over Suffolk Thursday night at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
Senior setter Caitlyn DePierro (Billerica, Mass.) added 31 assists, three kills and three service aces and senior libero Amanda Wilson (Merrimack, N.H.) tied for a match-high 17 digs as DWC surpassed the 2008 club's 5-0 mark out of the gate with set scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-27 and 25-18.
Junior Jennifer Finneran (Barnstead, N.H.) chipped in with six kills and two solo blocks for the winners. Fellow junior Brier Temple (Concord, N.H.) added four kills and 12 digs.
Maggie Hillman (N. Andover, Mass.) paced the Rams (2-7) with a double-double of 11 kills and 16 digs while Melissa Griffin (Byfield, Mass.) added seven kills and 14 digs. Glamarys Sierra (Carolina, P.R.) dished out 22 assists and added four aces.
Crawford, now averaging over 13 kills per match over her last four outings, along with Breault set the tone early combining for seven kills in the opening frame and were aided by a Ram offense that struggled, managing just six kills total. Junior Emily Travis (Somerset, Mass.) broke it open with a 10-point run at the line that turned a 10-10 tie on to a 20-10 Eagle lead.
DWC did its primary damage in set two, hitting .393 as a team with Crawford knocking down five kills before Suffolk rallied in the third, eking out a 27-25 win in a set that saw 18 ties and six lead changes. Hillman did the bulk of her damage with seven of her 11 put downs in the stanza.
The Eagles trailed only once in the fourth (0-1) building leads of as many as six points early on (13-7). Suffolk cut the lead to 13-12 behind three Eagle errors a Hillman kill and a Sierra ace. But DWC answered with a Finneran kill, a DePierro ace and a Crawford kill to spark a quick 5-0 run and DWC didn't look back.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday at Framingham State in a regional trimatch that also includes Lasell beginning at 2:00 p.m.
