Nashua, N.H - Junior guard Joyce Chagan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) continued her hot scoring hand of late, netting a game high 27 points and added four assists and the Daniel Webster College women's basketball team reset it's all time program record for wins in a season with a 78-37 victory over Wheelock College in a NECC matchup Saturday at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
Chagan, who netted a career high 29 points in her last outing, went 11 for 20 from the field and added three assists, while Alyssa Regan (Salem, N.H.) tied her career high with 16 points going 7 for 10 from the floor and added a career best 13 rebounds as the Eagles improved to 18-5 overall (13-1 NECC), inching ever closer to their first conference regular season title.
DWC broke its previous record of 17 wins set last season when the team went 17-11.
The Eagles still hold a game and a half lead over second place Lesley (11-2 NECC) with two games remaining, while Lesley has three games left.
Tonisha Tate (Lynn, Mass.) added 12 points for Daniel Webster, while Kristen Murphy had nine boards and five points and Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.) added seven points and eight boards.
Eagles leading scorer Vanessa Bosques (N. Windham, Conn.) connected for seven points and eight rebounds.
Elise Ordile (Waltham, Mass.) and Sarah Brown (Plainville, Conn.) had nine points each to lead Wheelock (4-18, 3-10 NECC), with Ordile adding a team high seven rebounds.
The Eagles, who overwhelmed Wheelock in rebounding (58-35), pulled in a season high 29 offensive boards.
Just four days removed from struggling with Wheelock on the road escaping with an eight-point victory, DWC trailed only once in the opening three minutes as a Sarah Brown three put Wheelock up 4-2.
But the Eagles followed with a 14-2 run including three layups from Chagan and another from Regan to open a 10-point lead (16-6) eight minutes in.
DWC held Wheelock to just six field goals and 18 first half points in building the lead out to as many as 20 before taking a 36-18 lead into the break.
The Eagles defense again took advantage of tough Wildcat shooting to open the second as Wheelock managed just four points over the first 7:50 and the lead would build to as many as 26 (50-24) after a Gervais layup.
DWC limited Wheelock to five points over the final six and a half minutes.
The Eagles visit Newbury College in a NECC battle Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. while Wheelock hosts Lesley Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
