Women's Basketball: Eagles Roll On, Sweep Away Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. - Elms College sophomore guards Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Katie Condon (Sandy Hook, Conn.) netted 12 points apiece, but Daniel Webster College received a game-high 23 points from Vanessa Bosques (N. Windham, Conn.) to help the Eagles to a 69-48 victory in the Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball game at Picknelly Arena.

Daniel Webster continued its torrid march through the NECC schedule, winning its sixth straight and 12th in its last 13 in improving to 16-4 on the season, and remained perfect at 11-0 in NECC action. With the loss, Elms falls to 7-13 overall, 6-5 in league play.

Daniel Webster stormed out to a 10-0 lead in the opening 5:15 before the Blazers answered with a 16-6 run, highlighted by a pair of treys by senior guard Annie Dunnack (Mansfield Center, Conn.) and a three-pointer from Condon to knot the score at 16-16 with 7:54 remaining in the opening period.

Two swishes from beyond the arc by Bosques fueled a 12-2 run by the Eagles, as Daniel Webster took a 28-20 lead into intermission.

Trailing 39-24 with 15:19 left in the contest, Talmadge connected for a pair of baskets and freshman guard Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) nailed a jumper to bring the Blazers to within nine at 39-30 with 12:42 to play.

Daniel Webster responded with 17 of the next 25 points to stake a 56-38 lead with 6:49 to play before Elms used a 6-2 run on the strength of a Condon three-pointer and a Normandie layup to cut the deficit to 14 at 58-44 with 4:58 remaining.

The Eagles then scored five consecutive points to take a 22 point lead (their largest of the game), and kept at least a 20-point cushion for the remainder of the contest en route to the 69-48 victory.

Dunnack finished with 10 points, while senior forward Jessica Jurkowski (Belchertown, Mass.) hauled in a tie for the game high in rebounds (9).

Daniel Webster held the Blazers to just 29.5-percent shooting from the field.

Bosques finished 8 of 17 from the floor and 4 of 9 from beyond the arc, draining 13 of her 23 points in the second frame. Tonisha Tate (Lynn, Mass.) netted 18 points, while Kacie Lang (Raymond, N.H.) grabbed nine boards.

Lang, Bosques and Joyce Chagan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) each handed out three assists in the winning effort.

The Eagles close out a three-game road swing when they visit NECC foe Weelock College Tueday at 7:00 p.m.
