Softball: Eagles Take Game Two To Earn Split With Bay Path
Nashua – Rookie Sarah Durocher (Keene, N.H.) allowed one run on four hits for a complete game victory, striking out five and walking two as host Daniel Webster topped Bay Path, 4-1 to earn a split of a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader after the Wildcats took the opener, 7-6 Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.
Durocher improved to 9-7 on the season and Lauren Chesnulevich had a key RBI double as the Eagles moved to 18-16 overall (10-5 NECC). DWC was aided by four Wildcat errors that led to two unearned runs.
Bay Path moved to 12-23 overall (7-7 NECC) with the split.
The Eagles jumped ahead 2-0 early on as Samantha Hill (Hudson, N.H.) doubled and scored on an error in the first and Chesnulevich doubled home Heather Strong (Palmer, Mass.) in the second.
Katherine Chabot (Brookfield, Mass.) singled, stole second, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a Nicole Ogden (Springfield, Mass.) ground out to make it a 2-1 game in the sixth, but DWC tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame keyed by a Durocher RBI single and two Bay Path errors leading to an unearned Strong run.
Mercedes Griffith (Malden, Mass.) had a double for the Wildcats.
In the opener, the Eagles were undone by an uncharacteristic six errors leading to six unearned Wildcat runs. Keelin Dougherty (Northfield, N.H.), Chabot, and Ogden all registered single RBI.
Strong notched an inside-the-park home run for the Eagles as part of a two-hit, two RBI game, while Chelsey Crawford (Westfield, Mass.) doubled, tripled and scored twice.
DWC took a 1-0 lead in the first on Crawford's triple and scored on a Wildcat error.
Bay Path answered with four in the top of the third keyed by two Eagle mistakes along with a Dougherty RBI double and a Chabot run-scoring single.
Lexie Fontaine (Plymouth, Mass.) would single and later score on an error to make it 4-2 in the bottom of the third and Strong's leadoff solo homer made it 4-3 in the fourth.
But Bay Path would tack on three in the fifth as the Eagles committed three more errors for a 7-3 game.
Strong and Courtney Brennan would help push across runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-5 game and a Hill RBI double would score Crawford in the sixth. But the Eagles went in order in the seventh allowing Bay Path to escape with the win.
Dougherty pitched both ends of the doubleheader, moving to 6-13 overall. She allowed four earned runs on nine hits, striking out one and walking three in the opener, and allowed two earned runs on eight hits, striking out one and walking one in the nightcap loss.
Amanda Wilson (Merrimack, N.H.) took the tough-luck loss for the Eagles in the opener, allowing just one earned run on six hits, striking out five and walking four.
The Eagles are now off until Friday when they visit NECC foe Lesley for a one-game makeup beginning at 4:00 p.m. and close the regular season hosting Newbury with a NECC doubleheader next Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
Bay Path hosts Elms Sunday in a NECC pair beginning at 1:00 p.m.
