Softball: Eagles Rally To Earn Split With Becker

Nashua – Pinch runner Trista Commeau (Swansea, Mass.) scored the go-ahead run on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning and rookie Sarah Durocher (Keene, N.H.) finished a solid afternoon with a spotless seventh for a complete game victory as host Daniel Webster held off Becker, 4-3 to earn a split in a pair of New England Collegiate Conference softball matchups Sunday at Eagle Field after Becker had rallied for a 12-10 victory in the opener.

The split moved the Eagles to 17-13 overall (9-2 NECC), while Becker moved to 10-19 (7-2 NECC). DWC, which crept to within two games of tying the single-season wins record, maintained a game lead over the Hawks for second place in the NECC standings (even in the loss column).

Durocher (8-6) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, striking out two and walking two. Senior Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.), junior Chelsey Crawford (Westfield, Mass.) and freshman Heather Strong (Palmer, Mass.) had two hits apiece, while Samantha Hill (Hudson, N.H.), Courtney Brennan (Beverly, Mass.) and Skye Ferland (Eden, Vt.) knocked in single runs.

Talon Barron (Methuen, Mass.), Jessica Brochu (Hardwick, Vt.), and Lauren Lavalle (Milbury, Mass.) each knocked in a run for Becker. Megan Cordon (Watertown, Conn.) was touched for the loss (5-10) allowing four runs (two earned) on 12 hit and striking out five, after earning the victory in game one.

Becker touched Durocher for all three runs on two hits in the top of the first and was aided by an infield error. Barron belted a RBI double, Brochu followed with run-scoring single and Lavalle later added a sac fly to score Barron.

A Hill run-scoring single plated Durocher for a 3-1 game in the bottom of the frame and Amanda Wilson (Merrimack, N.H.) would score on a Ferland single in the second for a 3-2 score. DWC would tie it in the third as Brennan would single home Lauren Chesnulevich (Hudson, N.H.), who had singled and stole second.

In the nightcap, Becker spotted DWC an 8-1 lead after two innings and trailed 10-5 after four, but rallied with four in the fifth and three in the top of the seventh to steal the 12-10 victory.

Brochu had the hot hand at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three doubles including the key two-run double in the seventh. Melissa Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) and Cordon knocked in two runs each.

Cordon was the story of the game on the mound, coming in to relieve the starter Rhodes, who left after four-plus allowing all 10 Eagle runs.

Cordon shut the door in the fourth and allowed only two base runners and one hit over the final three innings, while striking out two and walking one.

DWC put the tying run on in the bottom of the seventh with two outs after a Waller walk and Durocher single, but Cordon got Chesnulevich to fly out at short to end it.

Crawford paced DWC going 3 for 4 with four RBI including a three-run double in the second and a RBI triple in the fourth. Hill added RBI singles in the first and second. Waller and Durocher would add two hits apiece.

DWC led 1-0 after one and after Becker tied it in the second with an unearned run, sent 10 women to the plate in the second, scoring seven runs on five hits.

Becker answered with a four-run fourth keyed by RBI doubles from Bolduc and Brochu and DWC added two in the bottom of the fourth for a 10-5 game setting up the late Hawks rally.

The Eagles are off until next Saturday when they host Bay Path in another NECC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Becker visits Bay Path on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
