Softball: Crawford Leads Eagles To Sweep St. Elzabeth For First Wins of Season
Nashua – Chelsey Crawford's (Westfield, Mass.) infield single in the bottom of the seventh scored Sarah Durocher (Keene, N.H.) from third base with one out to give the Daniel Webster softball team a dramatic, 6-5 victory over Saint Elizabeth College and complete an afternoon sweep of the Screaming Eagles in the host Eagles' home openers Saturday at Eagle Field.
Crawford's winner capped a remarkable day for the junior centerfielder, who went a combined 8 for 10 in the twin bill, knocking in seven runs as the Eagles, who won a 15-9 slugfest in the opener, snagged their first victories of the season in improving to 2-9 overall and gave first year Head Coach Danielle DelPonte her first wins behind the bench.
DWC escaped with the game two victory after the visiting Screaming Eagles (3-9) had rallied from a 5-2 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Seniors Amanda Wilson (Merrimack, N.H.) and Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.) combined to each go 4 for 7 on the afternoon to help the Eagles cause. Waller would knock in four runs and score four times batting leadoff, while Wilson knocked in one. Rookie Heather Strong ( ) added a 3 for 7 day.
Kelly Brown (Stewartsville, N.J.) paced Saint Elizabeth, combining to go 5 for 8 with a pair of doubles at the plate, with six RBI including two doubles. Madellyn Rodriguez (Hoboken, N.J.) and Noelle Grande (Parsippany, N.J.) each went 4 for 8 while Kelly O'Dell (Stewartsville) finished 3 for 7 with a double.
The teams combined for 35 hits in the opener, and Crawford posted the first 5 for 5 game of her career, with RBI singles in the first, third, fourth and a two-run single in the sixth.
DWC trailed early falling behind 4-1 after two and 7-2 midway through the fourth, but rallied with four in the bottom of the fourth, added two in the fifth, and took control with a seven-run sixth.
Waller finished 3 for 3 knocking in two and scored four times, Strong went 2 for 4 knocking in three, while Durocher, Samantha Hill (Raymond, N.H.), Wilson, and Courtney Brennan (Beverly, Mass.) all had two hits.
Brown was a perfect 4 for 4 and knocked in four for Saint Elizabeth, while Grande was 3 for 4, scored three runs and knocked in one at leadoff. O'Dell, Rodriguez and Alesandria DeSapio (Frenchtown, N.J.) added two hits each.
Wilson earned her first win (1-5) in the circle for DWC, allowing six earned runs, striking out three and walking two.
Catherine Eber (S. Amboy, N.J.) took the loss (2-4), allowing 10 earned runs, striking out one and walking five.
In the nightcap, DWC earned the win despite scoring only one earned run as Saint Elizabeth committed five errors, while committing six of their own.
Crawford would finish 3 for 5 with two RBI, while Wilson, Lexie Fontaine (Plymouth, Mass.) and Lauren Chesnulevich (Hudson, N.H.) added two hits apiece and Strong tripled and scored in the sixth.
Durocher picked up her first win on the mound (1-4), allowing five earned runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking two.
Rodriguez had two hits for the Screaming Eagles, while Brown and Luisa Solano knocked in two runs each.
Hassanah Boykins (Newark, N.J.) took the tough-luck loss (1-3), allowing only one earned run on 12 hits, walking three.
DWC forged ahead 1-0 in the first as Hill reached on an error that scored Chesnulevich. A two-run double from Brown in the third made it 2-1 CSE, but DWC answered with two unearned in the fourth including a RBI single from Crawford.
RBI singles from Waller in the fifth and Wilson in the sixth to push Strong across had built the lead to 5-2 setting up the wild finish in the seventh.
The Eagles are off until Friday when they host Maine-Presque Isle in a regional matchup beginning at 3:30 p.m.
