Softball: Eagles Drop Two In Season Openers In Kissimmee
Kissimmee, Fla. – The Daniel Webster softball team opened its 2012 season dropping a pair of contests to 17th ranked Rowan (NJ) University by a 17-0 score and followed with a tough 6-5 setback to Presentation College of South Dakota Saturday at Osceola Athletics Complex.
DWC was held hitless in the opener as Rowan pitcher Leanne Miller struck out nine. The Profs (6-0) scored four in the first and second innings and broke it open with an eight-run third. Eagle senior Amanda Wilson (Merrimack, N.H.) took the loss.
In the nightcap against the Saints, DWC (0-2) built a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, but Presentation (2-8) pushed home two runs in the fifth and scored four in the bottom of the sixth for the eventual game winner.
Junior Chelsey Crawford (Westfield, Mass.) paced the Eagle offense with two run scoring triples in the first and second and added another RBI in the fourth. Samantha Hill (Hudson, N.H.) added two hits including a run-scoring single in the first.
Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.) added two hits for the Eagles, while rookie Heather Strong (Palmer, Mass.) picked up her first collegiate hit with a third inning single.
Freshman Sarah Durocher (Keene, N.H.) took the loss (0-1).
The Eagles face Skidmore (NY) and Anderson (IN) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectfully.
