Boston, Mass. – The Wheelock softball team collected nine hits in the first game of Tuesday's double-header, but left ten runners on base as the Wildcats fell 11-4 in New England Collegiate Conference play. In game two, Daniel Webster senior Kristina Rieger (Concord, NH) shut out the Wildcats, scattering five hits over five innings while striking out three.
Wheelock took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame when Erin Reardon (Old Towne, Maine) singled to center for the first of her two hits of the game, bringing in Sarah Negron (Bristol, RI). After a fielder's choice from Nicole Perullo (Revere, Mass.), back to back walks brought in the second run of the game.
The Eagles broke what was a 3-3 tie in the top of the fourth on one out RBI single from sophomore Lauren Chesnulevich that pushed the Daniel Webster lead to 5-3. The Wildcats closed to within one on an RBI double by Perullo, but the Eagles exploded for five runs on six hits in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Reardon and Jacky Hull (Braintree, Mass.) each had multiple hit games for Wheelock, with Reardon recording two RBI's.
All nine Daniel Webster players recorded a hit with five recording multiple hit games. Kelly led the way with a 4-5 game and 3 RBI while Rieger was 3-5 with 3 RBI's as well. Chesnulevich recorded two RBI's. The game also provided some awesome defense on both sides with Wildcat shortstop Ordile making a diving grab to save a run in the fifth, while outfielders Chelsey Floyd Crawford (Westfield, Mass.) and Kelly each took hits away from Wheelock with diving catches.
The Eagles jumped out to the early lead in game two, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the first. After surrendering another run in the top of two, the Wildcats looked to be in business when Ordile, Val Cook (Walpole, Mass.) and Lindsey Lacourse (Scarborough, Maine) slapped back to back to back singles. But Wheelock couldn't get the ball out of the infield and the Eagles got out of the inning unscathed.
Lacourse had the only multiple hit for Wheelock in game two, going two for two. Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.), Crawford, and Rieger each had two hits with Crawford and Rieger picking up three and two RBI's, respectively.
Wheelock returns to action Saturday when they travel to Elms College, while Daniel Webster hosts Mitchell the same day.
