Nashua - Sophomore Rick Trafton's (Raymond, N.H.) header
off rookie Rasmus Ronas's (Gotheborg, Sweden) corner kick with 5:11
remaining in regulation stood up over the final minutes as the
Daniel Webster men's soccer team continued its longest win streak
in program history with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Rivier
College Wednesday night at Raider Field.
Trafton's winner came as the Eagles played a man up over the final
20 minutes of the contest after a Rivier red card. The goal gave
the streaking Eagles their sixth win of the year after a 0-2 start
as they topped their oldest rivals (1-8) for the third straight
year.
Sophomore Spencer Bernard (Windsor Locks, Conn.) had tied the game
with 23:11 remaining knocking home an Alex Jackson (Kent, Ohio)
pass. Bernard had put the Eagles ahead in the first half off an
initial Jackson feed before upset-minded Rivier came back to take a
2-1 lead into the break.
Joe Keene (Bristol, N.H.) finished with three saves for the
Eagles.
The win leads to a pivotal mid-season showdown that looms this
coming Saturday. The Eagles host the NECC's surprise team of the
season in Southern Vermont at 1:00 p.m. at Eagle Field in a battle
for first place in the league standings. The Eagles stand 2-0 in
league play while the Mountaineers are 8-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in
league play.
