Nashua - Sophomore Spencer Bernard (Windsor Locks, Conn.)
and rookie Rasmus Ronas (Gotheborg, Sweden) notched goals in the
first and second half respectively, guiding host Daniel Webster
College past Mount Ida College, 2-0 in a New England regional men's
soccer matchup Tuesday at Eagle Field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Keene (Bristol, N.H.) added four saves for
his second shutout of the season as the Eagles (4-2) won their
fourth straight for the first time since 1993, tying the all time
program record.
Andrew Clark (Greenville, N.Y.) made nine saves for the Mustangs
(3-6).
Bernard took advantage of a Mount Ida defensive miscue to register
his fourth of the season in the 19th minute, sending a hard shot
from the left side that bounced off a Mustang defender directly
back to Bernard. With Clark pulled out of position, Bernard buried
a one-time to the far right corner for a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles doubled the lead in the 54th thanks to the Eagles'
Swedish connection. Rookie midfielder Joel Jerrhag (Ystad, Sweden)
found a streaking Ronas straight up the middle and deftly split two
defenders with a soft pass that Ronas buried from 15 yards out.
Mount Ida saw its best scoring chance snuffed midway through the
first half when Hermes Lima (Boston, Mass.) hopped on a loose ball
5 yards out but Keene knocked the shot down with a sterling stop to
keep the shutout intact.
After finishing tied in total shots (4-4) at the half, the Eagles
controlled the tempo throughout the second frame as the team
defense held the Mustangs without a shot. DWC would finish with an
11-4 advantage.
The Eagles return to action Saturday when they host Elms College in
a NECC game at 1:00 p.m. Mount Ida hosts Lasell in a GNAC game
Sunday at Noon.
