Men's Lacrosse: Mount Ida Topples Eagles
aNashua – The Mount Ida men's lacrosse team struck for eight first quarter goals setting the tone early on and went on to post a 14-3 victory over host Daniel Webster in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday at Eagle Field.
Michael Trocchi (Danvers, Mass.) notched three goals and two assists while Gilson Fernandes (Saugus, Mass.) added a hat trick and one assist as the Mustangs (7-3, 5-0 GNAC) won for the sixth straight time and maintained their hold on first place in the standings. Nick Yacuzzi (Worcester, Mass.) added a pair of markers and three assists and Jake Davis potted two goals.
Kurtis Fotheringham (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Justin Chiulli (Saugus) netted single scores for the Eagles (3-5, 0-5 GNAC), both coming in the second quarter.
Kyle Cordaro (Worcester), Jimmy McAllister (Smithfield, R.I.) and Craig Bay (New Canaan, Conn.) combined for three saves in goal for the Mustangs. Tommy Driscoll (South Boston, Mass.) stopped six shots for DWC.
Cordaro, Nick Maurais (Peabody, Mass.), Ian Saunders (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and Ryan Tirelli (Yorktown, N.Y.) added single goals for the winners.
Mount Ida finished with a 20-5 shots in goal advantage and a 30-26 advantage on ground balls, while picking up two short-handed goals and held the Eagles to 1 for 8 on extra man opportunities.
Trocchi netted his hat trick in the first period while Fernandes added two.
Yacuzzi made it 9-0 1:51 into the second but Fotheringham answered seven seconds later off the faceoff with his 10th of the season to put the Eagles on the board. Trocchi and Yacuzzi followed midway through the quarter for an 11-1 game before Chiulli netted his 14th of the year with 2:42 to go before the break.
Davis would net both his scores in the third quarter while Fernandes tacked on his third midway through the fourth for the 14-3 final.
The Eagles return to action next Wednesday hosting Lasell in a GNAC matchup beginning at 4:00 p.m. Mount Ida visits Lasell in a rematch of last year's GNAC title game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
