Men's Lacrosse: Eagles Move To 2-1 With 14-3 Win Over Wheelock
Nashua – Rookie Kurtis Fotheringham (Shrewsbury, Mass.) notched three goals and added two assists and junior Justin Chiulli (Saugus, Mass.) added a hat trick goals and one assist guiding host Daniel Webster past Wheelock, 14-3 in a regional men's lacrosse matchup Thursday afternoon at Eagle Field.
Adam Russo (Arlington, Mass.), Wilson Chang (Lee, Mass.) and Matt Burns (Cheyenne, Wyo.) added solo scores for the Wildcats (0-4).
Mike Manning played well in goal for Wheelock, making 11 stops, while Eagle netminder Tommy Driscoll (South Boston, Mass.) registered six saves.
DWC led 2-1 after one period and 3-2 early in the second, but pulled way with a five goal second period to lead 7-2 at the half and broke it open with a four-goal third to lead 11-2 after three.
Fotheringham and Chiulli gave DWC a 2-0 lead in the opening 2:39 of the contest and Russo answered at the 2:51 mark for a 2-1 game.
Fotheringham upped it to 3-1 with a shorthanded score off a Knupfer feed 2:37 into the second and Burns pulled Wheelock back within one 37 seconds later.
But Knupfer answered exactly one minute later on the power play, Burr followed at the 5:50 mark and Chiulli netted his second for a 6-2 game with 6:58 to go. Smith would late close the second quarter and open the third with his pair of strikes to make it 8-2 while Knupfer, Loranger and Merkel would each pot goals in the third.
Gordon, Chiulli and Knupfer added fourth quarter tallies for a 14-2 lead before Chang closed the scoring with 2:30 to play.
DWC finished with a 35-11 total shots advantage and also earned wins in groundballs (27-22) and clears (14-11).
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday visiting Becker in a GNAC matchup at 12:00 p.m. while Wheelock visits Emmanuel on Monday beginning at 7:00 p.m.
