Baseball: Eagles Stay Hot, Sweep Mariners For Eighth Straight

Nashua – Freshman Erick Bordeau's (Alton Bay, N.H.) walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh scored Nate Marshall (Groveton, N.H.) from first to give the Daniel Webster baseball team a 6-5 victory in game one, while Korey LeLievre (Hudson, N.H.) went the distance with a three-hit, seven-inning shutout as the Eagles prevailed 2-0 in game two to earn a doubleheader sweep of Mitchell College in a pair of NECC matchups Saturday Harvey Woods Field.

The wins kept the Eagles hot since returning north. DWC improved to 13-10 overall (8-4 NECC) as they won for the eighth straight time and 11th in their last 13. The Eagles also completed a three-game sweep of the Mariners (5-13, 4-5 NECC), after an 8-3 victory in New London, Conn. on Friday.

Bordeau's winner in the opener came with two out and Marshall running, making a winner of Eagle reliever Rich Lizotte (West Warwick, R.I.) who came on in place of starter Aaron Agrelo (New Bedford, N.H.). Agrelo took the no decision going 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, striking out two.

Mitchell had rallied from a 5-3 deficit by plating two in the top of the seventh off Lizotte, keyed by two Eagle errors followed by back-to-back sac flies from Will Charowsky (Cold Spring, N.Y.) and Rafael Garcia (New Britain, Conn.), who knocked in two runs.

DWC plated three in the first on a two-run single from Tyler Bonin (Litchfield) and a RBI single from Aaron Richards (West Warwick), who would finish with three hits.

Mitchell followed with an unearned run in the top of the second and LeLievre answered in the bottom of the frame with a run-scoring single to plate Lizotte for a 4-1 game.

A Charowsky RBI double made it 4-2 and Charowsky would come in on a Garcia single to cut it to one in the top of the third, but a Josh Chasse (Haverhill, Mass.) sac fly in the bottom of the inning gave DWC a 5-3 lead setting up Mitchell's late rally to tie it.

Mike Sturges (New Britain) took the loss (1-3) going 6 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out two.

Elliot Kilgore (Milford, N.H.) added two singles for DWC. Tyler Shultis (West Hurley, N.Y.) had two hits with a double for Mitchell.

In the nightcap, LeLievre improved to 2-2 overall striking out two and walking three. Mitchell put runners at first and second with two out in the seventh, but LeLievre got Shultis on a comeback to the mound to preserve the win.

Bordeau again led DWC with two hits while Evan Peck (Shelton, Conn.) had a pair for the Mariners.

DWC struck again in the first as Darrik Marstaller (Spofford, N.H.) singled, advanced on a balk and came home on a Kyle Brigham (Hudson, N.H.) single to right center.

LeLievre settled into a groove, retiring 10 straight from the third through sixth and the Eagles provided help in the sixth as Ryan Dupont (Merrimack, N.H.) reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a Bordeau infield single and scored on a Lizotte sac fly to center.

Mike Grofsick (Hawthorne, N.J.) took the loss (0-4), allowing just one earned run on five hits over 4 2/3 innings, striking out one and walking one.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against intracity rival Rivier beginning at 5:00 p.m. The games will once again be played at Nashua's historic Holman Stadium with each team serving as a home team in one game.

Mitchell visits Elms next Saturday for a NECC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
