Baseball: LeLievre's Three-Run Shot Propels Eagles Past Vikings, 5-3
Salem, MA -- Rookie Korey LeLievre (Hudson, NH) blasted the go-ahead and eventual game-winning three-run home run over the left-center fence in the top of the eighth inning as Daniel Webster rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Salem State, 5-3 at the Central Campus Baseball Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Vikings fell to 8-9 while Daniel Webster won their fourth straight to improve to 11-4.
The Eagles' Connor Milliken (Dayville, CT) earned the win (2-0) after replacing starter Zack Hurley (Hudson, NH) in the bottom of the seventh. He retired five straight Viking batters before allowing a walk. Rich Lizotte (West Warwick, RI), who started the game at shortstop for the Eagles, retired the next four Vikings hitters to pick up save in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Hurley was solid through six, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits.
Co-captain Mario Padovani (Lynnfield, MA) pitched six solid innings, but got the no decision. He gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out four.
Ryan Hyjek (Tolland, CT) entered the game in the seventh and struck out the side, but gave up the three go-ahead runs on four hits in the eighth. He finished with four strike outs.
After Kane's homer, Salem State added another in the third with a sacrifice fly from Steve Butkus (Reading, MA) which plated co-captain Erik Juncker (Rockport, MA).
The Eagles then clawed away at the Vikings' lead, scoring a run in the fourth and a run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Kane finished the game 2-for-4 and Butkus hit 2-for-2. The Eagles' Bruce Brown (Lowell, MA) went 1-for-2, reached base four times, stole three bases for his ninth of the year, and scored two runs.
The Vikings travel to Portland, ME tomorrow to play the University of Southern Maine at 3:30 p.m. Daniel Webster plays next at home against Maine-Presque Isle at 2 p.m.
