Eagles Sweep Newbury For First Wins Of Season

Nashua - The Daniel Webster College baseball team scored its first victories of the season, sweeping Newbury College in a NECC doubleheader Saturday afternoon, winning 15-7 and 10-6 at Harvey Woods Field.

In the opener, the Eagles (2-14, 2-2 NECC) broke open a 1-0 game with five runs in the bottom of the second and plated six more in the fourth building a 15-1 lead after five.

Zach Cantor (Windham, Maine) went 3 for 5 scoring twice and knocked in four runs including a three-run triple in the fourth. Joe Tamulonis (Woodstock, N.H.) added a 2 for 2 outing, scored twice, and knocked in three including a run-scoring double in the fifth.

Chris McKenzie (Burlington, Mass.) notched two RBI singles, while Kenny Martin (Brockton, Mass.) went 3 for 4 with a double and scored four runs.

Michael Dean (Wethersfield, Conn.) led the Nighthawks (1-15, 0-4 NECC) with two hits including a two-run single in the sixth and a two-run double in the seventh.

Alex Chetelat (Farmington, Conn.) added two hits including a RBI double. Wayne Borden (Methuen, Mass.) went 2 for 3.

Kory Kiro (Goffstown, N.H.) earned the complete game victory (1-3) allowing just one earned run while striking out seven and helped his own cause with two hits including a double and knocked in a run.

Jorge Pimentel (Winsted, Conn.) took the loss (1-3).

In the nightcap, McKenzie knocked in three runs and scored twice and Martin added two RBI as the Eagles again jumped head early plating three runs in the first, three in the second and two in the third for an 8-0 lead.

Nick Michaud (Windsor Locks, Conn.) scattered six hits over six innings to earn his first win of the season (1-4), allowing two earned runs.

McKenzie knocked in runs with a sac fly in the second, RBI single in the third and drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth.

Peter Plansky (Litchfield, N.H.) posted two hits, scored twice and had a RBI sac fly in the first, while Tamulonis (sac fly RBI in the sixth) added two hits including a triple in the second. Nate Marshall (Groveton, N.H.) added two hits.

Steve Saia (Avon, Mass.) took the loss (0-2), allowing two earned runs on 11 hits, striking out three and walking two.

Dean stroked a two-run single for Newbury in the fifth, while William Maddock (Marshfield, Mass.) added two hits.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday hosting Rivier College at 2:00 p.m.
